Marking the stage debut of film director Penny Woolcock, this spectacular opera by John Adams about the Americans behind the building of the first atomic bomb at Los Alamos opened the 2008-09 season at the Metropolitan Opera on Monday the 13th of October 2008.

On the 8th of November 2008, the matinee performance was broadcast live in High Definition to movie theatres around the world.

Featuring set design by regular 59 collaborator Julian Crouch, and lighting by Brian McDevitt, the opera is 59's second video design job at the Met, following Satyagraha in May 2008.
